Winegrowers of Abruzzo

Marchesi Migliorati is a project aimed at recovering and developing high-potential vineyards in Abruzzo which have unfortunately been abandoned or neglected.

The location

We are in the Abruzzo region, in Central Italy, perched on the Apennines and overlooking the Adriatic Sea.

The Abruzzo region boasts some of Italy’s most striking landscapes. 30% of the region is covered by mountains and another third is protected by national parks, while the rest offers some of Italy’s finest farmland.

With the longest stretch of the Adriatic coastline in the country and the majestic Gran Sasso Nord Ovest, Abruzzo hosts dozens of different terroirs and microclimates.

And it is this exceptional natural biodiversity (in which vineyards exist harmoniously alongside pastures filled with sheep and crocus fields for the production of saffron) that makes organic viticulture for the wines of Marchesi Migliorati possible.

The vineyards entrusted to the care of Marchesi Migliorati are in Val di Sangro, a wild and wonderful part of Abruzzo that stretches across hills and at the foot of the mountains.

The altitude and exposure of the vineyards allow the vines to absorb all the rays of the sun, which rises in the Majella area, from the Morrone Mountains, while benefiting from cooler temperatures than those on the plains, ensuring controlled ripening and a high concentration of aromas in the grapes.

Values

01Sustainability

We have the utmost respect for our home, Abruzzo: a region that is still largely unspoilt, with numerous ecosystems and natural habitats, as well as a wide variety of plant and animal species; this is why we cultivate the vineyards entrusted to us in a natural way and in compliance with organic farming regulations. Not content with that, we have also worked to consolidate a biodynamic lifestyle and have finally obtained official certification.

02Courage

Marchesi Migliorati has unequivocally focused on a difficult area that has been practically abandoned, where the owners of the vineyards often live elsewhere, having emigrated overseas to seek a better life, possibly even decades ago. The aim of Marchesi Migliorati is precisely to develop and restore this wonderful and forgotten land to its former glory, farming it on behalf of its distant owners.

03Uniqueness

Abruzzo is one of the Italian regions where the vine has found fertile ground for its development since ancient times. Unlike many other wineries in the area, Marchesi Migliorati focuses unequivocally on producing limited quantities but of the highest quality, to take the excellence of Abruzzo to tables all over the world.

04Respect

Thanks to the collaboration with Biovitis, a company specialising in farming vineyards, Marchesi Migliorati meticulously tends its vines with teams of qualified pruners, combining innovation and traction in the countryside. Marchesi Migliorati’s wines contain no additives of animal origin and this means that they are certified VEGAN. Lastly, the company has begun the process of obtaining EQUALITAS certification, which certifies the entire supply chain and guarantees the respect and fair treatment of all workers.

Wines

We have decided to promote the native varieties of the area, focusing on production of the highest quality and enhancing the intrinsic characteristics of the grapes, limiting processing in the cellar to a minimum and reducing the levels of added sulphites as much as possible. Our interpretations of Montepulciano, Trebbiano, Cerasuolo and Pecorino are lively and mineral wines, reflecting a wonderful area surrounded by hills overlooking the sea, where these native grape varieties have found their ideal ecosystem. All our wines are produced from organic and biodynamic agriculture and are certified vegan (they contain no additives of animal origin).
